Dental Implants – The Preferred Method of Dentistry Used When Replacing Teeth

Using dental implants to replace missing teeth is the ideal solution for a patient who lost has his teeth due to trauma, decay, or because of the periodontal disease. It provides a natural look and feel without the need for a dentist to alter the existing healthy teeth. When dental implants are used to replace the missing teeth, they allow for better stimulation against the jawbone.

Dental implants are the preferred method of repair, in comparison to dentures. This is namely because a dentist can treat several missing teeth with the dental implants. This procedure will provide dental patients with a permanent fix, unlike those who use dentures that continuously move around the mouth – or potentially fall out at an inopportune time. Using implants can help prevent bone deterioration; this method also helps to preserve the jawbone and typically lasts a lifetime.

Dental implants are also preferred over dental bridges because of the drawbacks that come with using a bridge. It is a misconception that a bridge is a cost-efficient procedure, in comparison to dental implants. A bridge can only be used if healthy teeth are adjacent. Those healthy teeth must be capped down in order to support the bridge. Over time, those capped teeth will weaken, and eventually begin to fail, which will create the need to have more dental work done. A bridge could end up costing a patient much more than the original amount in the long-run, but this is not the case with implants. Further, treating a tooth with a bridge may not be possible due to the size of the tooth and it needs to be replaced every five to seven years, whereas the dental implants do not have a time limit.

During childhood, losing teeth is celebrated; however, the loss of teeth during adulthood can be embarrassing, and bad for the oral health. Biting down – or eating food – can become extremely difficult, and due to the extra room that the missing teeth can create, other teeth may start to shift inside the mouth. If the body stops sending nutrients to the area one’s tooth or teeth are missing, the bones can also deteriorate, which will cause aging – often leaving people with a sunken appearance. To prevent this from happening, the best option / solution is dental implants. One will not only look and also feel better, but be able to function better overall after treatment.
