Brush Up on the Basics!

Brush Up on the Basics!

To keep your smile at its best and ensure a lifetime of good oral health, early detection and treatment is essential. Plus, it only takes a few minute each day!
Consider these smile-friendly tips from the American Dental Association:

  • Brush thoroughly – allow two minutes twice a day. Rinse brush and allow it to air-dry. Replace it every three to four months.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush or battery-operated toothbrush.
  • Brush smart – use short back-and forth motions on all chewing surfaces as well as your tongue. Avoid harsh scrubbing to keep your gums healthy.
  • Battle plaque – this film sticks to teeth and gums and can cause tooth decay. You can control it with brushing and flossing!
  • Floss frequently one tooth at a time. This will reduce plaque and increase gum health!
  • Find your favorite floss; you’ll see the difference! Try waxed varieties, a floss holder or an interdental cleaner.
  • Rinse! Finish with an antimicrobial mouth rinse to help reduce plaque between your teeth.
  • Schedule dental cleanings and exams twice a year, and contact your dentist immediately if you have any of the following symptoms.
    • Red, tender or swollen gums
    • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
    • Gums that begin pulling away from your teeth
    • Loose permanent teeth
    • Changes in the way your top and bottom teeth align with each other
    • Unusual sensitivity to hot and cold
    • Persistent bad breath or an unusual taste in your mouth

Remember, practicing good oral care techniques is one of the most important things you can do for your teeth. And you’ll be rewarded with a lifetime of smiles!
