An Invisalign Dentist Does More Than Fix Smiles

It’s no secret that an experienced Invisalign dentist can help patients to achieve a more attractive smile with straighter teeth in a fraction of the time required for treatment with ordinary metal braces. Cosmetic dental considerations are usually uppermost in people’s minds when they decide on orthodontic services, but the fact is that there are much better reasons to have your crooked, misaligned teeth fixed with Invisalign.

About “Malocclusion”

“Malocclusion” is the medical term for a bad bite, which is primarily – but not always – due to teeth that are overcrowded, erupt in unusual places or at odd angles, or have been knocked out of place by an accident. The fact is that nearly every person suffers from some degree of malocclusion. However, in the majority of cases the condition is so slight as to be unnoticeable and normally does not require dental treatments. At the other end of the spectrum, there are people whose malocclusion is so severe that neither braces nor Invisalign can be of much help; these cases usually require some type of invasive surgery.

Braces and Invisalign are most helpful to those whose malocclusions are mild to moderate in nature.

Metal Braces vs. Invisalign

The main advantage of metal braces is cost, which is somewhat lower than Invisalign treatments. However, this is really the only advantage – and the cost savings are relatively small when all the advantages of Invisalign are factored in.

Most importantly, Invisalign are more hygienic. The most serious drawback to metal braces is the fact that they make proper dental hygiene virtually impossible. Because of the often complex arrangement of wires and metal bands, the use of dental floss is not possible, and tiny food particles invariable get trapped in the metalwork. Of course, once metal braces are in, they are in for the duration of the treatment. This not only makes teeth cleaning difficult, it makes it impossible for the dentist to detect tooth decay if and when it sets in – because x-rays cannot be used on patients with braces.

On the other hand, Invisalign retainers (known as “trays”) are easily removed for eating and cleaning (though of course they should be worn at all other times). Some people actually get their Invisalign trays to do double duty by putting whitening gel in them – getting a brighter, whiter smile while having their teeth realigned.

Patients usually see results with Invisalign treatments in a much shorter time as well. Whereas treatments with braces can last between thirty-six and sixty months, Invisalign patients often see substantial improvement in as little as a year (though eighteen months is more realistic, depending on the severity of the malocclusion).
